Sculpture & Built Environments; Production, Planning and Design
Is an award-winning design and sculpture studio in Austin, Texas that specializes in site-specific projects. Typically, for most of our work the conceptual starting point is a cultural or spiritual event that is developed into a narrative. The project narrative is then translated into patterns or symbols that inspire and articulate the sculptural form. As the layers emerge, our work strives to embrace community, history, function, craftsmanship and ambience.
The majority of our work is in limestone from Texas or Indiana. We also work in marble, soapstone, alabaster and slate. We were trained by English carvers and masons at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in New York City during the years 1980-1992. Our professional experience has expanded to include notable Texas projects such as the Palmer Community center, Governor Ann Richards Memorial, Zilker Botanical Gardens, the Cathedral of St Mary, St. Louis Catholic Church, Our Lady of the Rosary Cemetery, Bexar and Ellis County Courthouses.
Throughout the years, we have committed our efforts to civic projects with an emphasis on reintroducing stone sculpture and hand-tailored architecture into the public realm. Traditionally, stone carvers have provided the world’s great civilizations with profound settings. Although their role in modern architecture has diminished, the artists of Kincannon Studios still believe that stone sculptors have the ability to translate cultural interests and principles into evocative and inspiring forms.
